The part most quotes skip
The single biggest thing deciding whether a new furnace is comfortable and cheap to run is whether it is the right size for your house. Bigger is not better. An oversized furnace heats the rooms nearest the ducts quickly, shuts off, then cycles back on, which leaves far rooms cold, wears the equipment sooner, and costs more to buy in the first place.
Sizing should come from a load calculation that accounts for your square footage, insulation, window area, and how leaky the house actually is. It should not be a guess based on whatever sat in the basement before, because that unit may well have been the wrong size for twenty years.

What AFUE means on your gas bill
Furnace efficiency is measured in AFUE, short for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It is the share of the fuel you buy that becomes heat inside your home. A 95 percent AFUE furnace turns about 95 cents of every fuel dollar into heat and sends the rest up the flue.
Higher AFUE equipment costs more up front and less every month. Whether that trade pays depends on how long you plan to stay, how hard your house works the furnace, and what you pay for gas.
